💛💜 MHA Week: How community helps us thrive, with life design coach Selina Barker

A conversation supporting Mental Health Awareness Week and this year's theme of Community

Hello everybody,

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK (12-19th May), and this year the theme is COMMUNITY, which just happens to be one of our speciality subjects.

And so the Shelf Help Club is supporting with a series of speedy lunchtime ‘lives’ with my favourite community leaders here on the platform.

For our second session I was joined by

, a Career and Life Design Coach on a mission to help people design lives and careers they love.

Selina is the author of 'Burnt Out', host of the Audible series 'The Career Change Coach' and creator of the awesome Project You 'Goodbye Hello' journals, as well as founder of the

publication and community here on Substack.

I loved this conversation highlighting how we can all show up to communities very differently, but still receive so much benefit from being held by a group. And holding the group in return.

(Also featuring a couple of audio cameos from dogs and the next door builders… keeping it real on the Lives!)

We’d both love to know how community supports your mental health, so please share in the Comments…

ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK 2025

The Mental Health Foundation has been leading MHA Week since 2001.

They say: “We want to use this Mental Health Awareness Week to celebrate the power and importance of community.

“Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us, we are not alone. Communities can provide a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times, and give us a sense purpose.”
