Hello everybody,
Inspired by our BOTM (The Celestine Prophecy) this is my summer of fine-tuning my intuition and following the signs.
Having spent a large part of my lifetime ignoring - and sometimes actively rejecting 🙈 - any glimmers of advice from my best and higher self this is most definitely a process.
But it’s amazing what happens when we start paying close attention to coincidences.
And the biggest and best reward for me is the people this is bringing into my world; IRL, digitally, and/or in book form.
Tamu Thomas is a name that has come into my orbit repeatedly for months, ever since her book, Women Who Work Too Much: Break free from toxic productivity and find your joy, was released in March.
Authors, shelfies, friends and publishers have all been telling me I need to read this book. But until recently I respectfully disagreed, because a) who likes being told what to do 😆, and b) I don’t work too much, I do have a lot of joy in my life and I (thought) I had already broken free from toxic productivity.
And then I listened to an interview with Tamu on the Therapised podcast with one of our previous author guests, Dr Lalitaa Suglani (you can listen to the podcast episode at the link below and/or watch my Shelf Help interview with Dr Lalitaa HERE) and I felt like the entire episode had been recorded just for me.
(In this episode, alongside advice on high-functioning anxiety and burnout, Tamu shares insights on how epigenetics and ancestral trauma can reveal how our past shapes our present, emphasising the importance of systemic change alongside personal growth).
So then I started (mildly) stalking Tamu online and then I started reading her book.
And then I wanted her to immediately be my coach and/or best friend. Or at the very least come and hang out with us all at an author event.
Yes (I learned from the book) I may have broken away from ‘toxic productivity’, but my frazzled nervous system is still living it HARD (Tamu is also a somatic movement practitioner).
I also learned that I need to UNlearn/reimagine the tools that I (and probably you) have been using for decades to adapt and survive in a world that encourages us to ‘have it all’ and rewards relentless production and achievement over liking ourselves and creating a contented life.
And Women Who Work Too Much is 100% a brilliant guide on how to do this.
So I followed The Signs and invited Tamu join us for a live author event TONIGHT to discuss the book and her work.
Tamu will also be sharing a couple of practices from the book, including a mindful embodiment practice, and a masterclass in the the art of savouring as a way to help us have a greater appreciation of the everyday joys of life.
Book Club members/subscribers will find tonight’s joining information, this week’s BOTM reading target and Tamu’s 5-step guide to savouring in the Members Only section below.
(And if you’re not a member but the idea of breaking free from toxic productivity and a lifetime of bending ourselves into impossible shapes for The System speaks to you, then you can subscribe now and you’ll find info on how to join us tonight in the Members Chat).
See you soon,
Toni 💛
PS This Wednesday evening I’ll be in East London hosting an IRL event as part of the The Islander Festival on London City Island. This will be an interactive session, where you’ll be guided through the Shelf Help S.P.I.E.S. framework for personal growth (Social, Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Spiritual health) as a way to support you in figuring out where you're at, where you want to be and - crucially - how to get there. Final tickets remaining and I’d love to see/meet you there.
